Your Roadmap to a Healthier Lifestyle

Each journey begins with that first step. It’s the first along a roadmap you’ve charted for yourself-knowing where you start and where you want to end. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) management is a journey that you may not want to take. But if you are at risk or dealing with T2D, it’s a journey you need to go on. There’s no better time to start than right now.

This is You!

✓ What brings me joy?

✓ What do I want my health to be in 2 years? 3 years? 5 years?

✓ What would my active lifestyle be along my journey?

✓ What will my new habits be?

✓ What are the benefits of my healthier lifestyle?

Start your journey with a mental vision of where you want to be at the end. What do you feel like in the healthiest state you want to achieve? This is the beginning. Find a quiet space, and a journal-or your computer- and set aside one hour to think about what your healthy end state will look like. This self-reflection helps you to crystallize blurry ideas. They will begin to take shape and form.

Write down your thoughts. Writing helps to form a solid foundation for your way forward. Feelings and the reason for your feelings are important. Acknowledging feelings and their basis is a key building block. For example, fear is a common feeling. If you are fearful about the future acknowledge that feeling so you can work through it. And don’t forget about the positive feelings. Do you enjoy walking the dog? Are you an amateur chef who loves to experiment in the kitchen?

Use the present tense in the first person when writing. This will help you as you review your notes later. For example “I am afraid for my health in the future.” Or “I love walking the dog in the mornings.” Recognizing your feelings puts you on the right track toward better T2D management. As you get smarter you get better care. Remember that knowledge is power

Create your vision of your future. At this point, you have identified feelings and their basis, and developed some concrete ideas about your path to better health. You are creating a picture of yourself in the future. Your vision statement should be clear and understandable. You will refer to it throughout your road to healthier living. If it is too long, you may get lost in it or not be able to keep your commitment. So, write it down and adjust it until it is something you can commit to.

Keep your vision in your mind’s eye. Don’t lose sight of what is important to you. Keep your notes handy. They serve as a reminder of what you want the healthier you to be in the future. If you get off course, retrace your steps and get back on the right path. There is only one exit ramp on this T2D highway and it is the one you take when you have achieved your vision.

Remember – hope is not a strategy. Turn your vision into reality through action.
